Iona Abbey Music Book
Songs from the Iona Abbey Worship Book
The Iona Community
isbn: 1901557731
Songbook $49.95

These 50 songs of challenge, change and encouragement are offered as a companion to the liturgies of the Iona Abbey Worship Book, which is used by an increasing number of congregations a long way from the island of Iona.

The songs recommended in the Worship Book as being relevant to the themes and theology of its liturgies are not always well known in other parts of the world. The Iona Abbey Music Book aims to fill this gap and provide access to the musical aspect of services in the Abbey.

Some of the songs included here have been published before in other collections, especially those by the Wild Goose Resource Group, but many are previously unpublished or currently not available elsewhere.

Customer Comment
Children here in Australia love this volume. I use the tape as an introduction and find it much easier for them to learn the songs this way. They need to "pick up" the particular sound of African singing and although your tape is recorded by a Swedish choir they interpret the African sound authentically, I feel. I am about to teach them to a group of young students from Asia studying English in Australia.

I Will Not Sing Alone (CD)
Wild Goose Collective & Macappella Ceilidh Band
ISBN: 1901557898
CD

I Will Not Sing Alone is a deliberately eclectic collection of words and music from different ages fused in contemporary arrangements.

There are ancient texts and modern texts, simple and sophisticated. There are choral anthems, folk tunes and contemporary syncopated melodies. The songs include exclamations of praise, meditative reflections on the love of God, and laments for the loss of a child and for countries at war.

The people who make the music are an even odder mixture. There are three cathedral musicians, several folk singers, some members of our previous Wild Goose Worship Group, a trainee Catholic priest, members of a ceilidh band, a descendant of a 14th century bishop, a Malayalam speaker, a native Swede, a Blue Peter badge winner – representing both genders, five nations, seven denominations and a variety of hairstylists and coutouriers.

Perhaps this is the only way to offer songs of faith which are intended for everybody. This is not a high octane choral album or a selection of psuedo-celtic escapist ditties, but songs of engagement with life and with God, all grounded in the passion and pain of Christian love.

The Wild Goose Collective comprises members and associates of the Wild Goose Resource Group, former musicians of lona Abbey and ‘discerning friends of our common purpose’. They coagulate here for the first time to record this collection.

The Macappella Ceilidh Band is based in Glasgow and is in constant demand for events and ceilidhs throughout Scotland. It has close connections with both the lona Community and Gorbals Parish Church in Glasgow.

I Saw a Stranger (CD)
Twenty songs from the Carmina Gaedelica
Oran
isbn: 1901557812
CD

The twenty original songs on this album are based on the Carmina Gaedelica, the ancient Scottish prayers and blessings collected and translated by Alexander Carmichael at the end of the 19th century which capture the essence of Celtic Christianity.

With titles like `The Healers of healers`, `The voice of thunder` and `The journey blessing`, the lyrics evoke the old Gaelic spirituality which saw God as manifest in all aspects of life, including the natural environment.

The songs are by Pat Livingstone and Donald Wetherick, members of the group Oran, both of whom have held the post of Abbey Musician at Iona Abbey.

One Is the Body
Songs of unity & diversity
John L. Bell
isbn 1901557359
Songbook $39.95
CD & tape available

The identity of Christians is intimately tied up with what they sing. Hymns and songs affect our understanding of the width or narrowness of the Gospel, whether faith is couched in archaic language or reflects contemporary culture and whether the church is essentially monochrome or mosaic.

The identity of the Body of Christ is thrown into new relief when we realise that the presumed complexion of the Church is no longer white and affluent, but black and poor.

This has compelled the Wild Goose Resource Group, an associate body of the lona Community, to ensure that in its work with church music and musicians as broad a panoply of material as possible is represented.

One Is the Body, therefore, encompasses songs from as diverse places as Hawaii and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, while also representing the home-grown fruit produced in and around Glasgow.

These songs are primarily for congregational use, for it is to the congregation which God directs the commandment, 'Sing me a new song.'

Songs included in One Is the Body:

  • Come and let us worship God (Uganda)

The Singing Thing
A case for congregational song
John L. Bell
isbn: 1901557286
Book  160pp

The first of two books addressing the ‘whys’ and ‘hows’ of congregational singing. Unapologetically anecdotal, it deals not with musical theories but with
the reasons why people sing and how best to enable them to do so.

This highly accessible analysis by John L. Bell, an expert on congregational song, offers ten persuasive answers to the question ‘Why do we sing?’ Each is explored with a wealth of illustration and practical insight born of 20 years’ experience in this field.

John L. Bell is a Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music and a member of the Wild Goose Resource & Worship Groups, whose purpose is the creative renewal of public worship and song.

Reader review :
This is a wonderful exposition of a "bottom up" philosophy of
singing - great stuff. How powerful singing together can be for people, how often we are damaged by teachers' thoughtless remarks, and how those wounds can be healed.
Rev. Jean Darling
