Book of the Month:
Christians and the Common Good.
Christians across the spectrum have soured on
religious involvement in politics.
Yet the kingdom of God is clearly concerned with justice and communal
well-being. Charles Gutenson explores how Christians can be active in public
life without getting mired down in political polarisation and controversy.

Christians and the
Common Good:
How Faith Intersects with Public Life.
Charles Gutenson. 180pp. Brazos. $37.00.
For too long, the question of faith in public life has
centred on what the Bible says about government. Gutenson, a theologian
respected by both evangelical and mainline Christians, argues that we
should ask how God intends for us to live together before considering
particular public policies and governmental institutions. By concentrating
on the nature of God, we can move past presuppositions regarding the role
of government and form a reasonable framework for engaging in healthy
discussions about how best to serve the common good. This lucidly written
book will appeal to readers interested in ethics, theology, and politics
and includes a foreword by bestselling author Jim Wallis.

Tom Wright
for Everyone:
Putting the Theology of N.T. Wright Into Practice
in the Local Church. Stephen Kuhrt. 160pp. SPCK. $29.99.
Kuhrt addresses the reticence of many evangelicals to engage with what Tom
Wright has been saying for some time. The book looks at key theological
questions awaiting an answer and gives an enlightening summary of the
theology of Tom Wright, arranged around terms like ‘Covenant’, ‘Heaven’,
‘Kingdom’, ‘The resurrection of Jesus’, and ‘justification’.
Then, in perhaps the most valuable part of the book, Stephen Kuhrt
describes in detail the difference putting Tom Wright’s theology into
practice has made in his own parish church, pastorally and in terms of
mission. The book ends with a clear statement of Tom Wright’s challenge to
the Church in the second decade of the 21st century.
“Kuhrt’s book makes a warm and convincing case that Tom Wright’s theology
has the potential to transform the local church, the academy and
contemporary evangelicalism. This is a timely and accessible introduction
to the significance of a formidable thinker and brave servant of God.”

The Didache:
A Window on the Earliest Christians.
Thomas O'Loughlin. 185pp. Baker. $45.00
The Didache
(or The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles) is one of the earliest Christian
writings, compiled between 50 and 70 CE. It offers a unique glimpse into
how some of the earliest Christian communities lived and worshiped.
O'Loughlin shares the story of this manual for training converts from its
discovery in an obscure library in Istanbul in the late 19th century to
the present and then offers an analysis of the text’s importance. The
Didache features a detailed description of the day-to-day faith and
step-by-step routines that shaped the Jesus movement some twenty years
after the death of Christ. This is an essential resource for readers
interested in history, Scripture, and liturgy in Christianity's earliest
period.

Alive to the Word:
A Practical Theology of Preaching for the Whole
Church. Stephen Wright. 204pp. SCM Press. $67.99.
“This book is for anyone wanting to review their own preaching ministry
and for anyone privileged to teach preaching to others. Wright explores
preaching today in all its contexts – the Bible, of course, but also our
contemporary communication culture, the life of the church, the life of
the preacher. It isn’t a “how to” book, but it’s packed with thoughtful
observations which make me think about the way I preach; and make me want
to do it better.” Paul Johns, Director of the College of Preachers.

A New Great Story. Don
Cupitt. 136pp. Polebridge Press. $49.00
“In this book I aim to set before the general reader a fully modern
alternative to the traditional Grand Narrative theology of Latin, or
Western, Christianity.” So begins A New Great Story. Christianity’s
classic “plan of salvation,” its so-called grand narrative, was a vast
myth of cosmic Creation, Fall and Redemption. Earth-centered and
supernaturalist, it was fatally damaged by Galileo and later astronomers,
and by historians of human origins.
Cupitt rewrites that traditional narrative as a new story of how religion
called us out of nature and gradually made us ourselves, social beings in
an ordered world, language-using and self-aware. |

Outspoken:
Coming Out in the Anglican Church of Aotearoa New Zealand. Liz
Lightfoot. 218pp. Otago Univ Press. $40.00.
Based on in-depth interviews, Lightfoot presents the narratives of 11
people who have come out in the Anglican Church in New Zealand, including
two ordained church members. She discusses related topics of: truth and
the Church; community, belonging and rejection; ideas about hell and
damnation; the theology of denial; and the implications of the “Don’t ask,
don't tell” approach.
The author notes that “People's lives are sacred ground and the area of
sexuality is one where people are arguably at their most vulnerable.” She
hopes that this research will contribute to community building within the
Anglican Church. |

The Gospel in Brief: The
Life of Jesus. Leo Tolstoy, translated by Dustin Condren. 180pp.
Harper Perennial. $22.99.
The four Gospels tell the life of Jesus, but each Gospel relates a
slightly different version of events. Some stories appear only in one
Gospel, while certain other stories are different in each. Tolstoy applied
his tremendous skills as a writer to tell the life of Jesus in one
seamless narrative, thus integrating the four Gospels. The result is a
work that reads like a novel in 12 chapters. Tolstoy wanted making the
life of Jesus accessible to everyone. (He particularly had in mind the
Russian peasantry.) Tolstoy based his translation on his study of the
original Greek versions of the Bible. Unfortunately, the Russian Orthodox
Church viewed the book as sacrilegious and in 1901, it permanently
excommunicated him. This
is the first translation into modern English. |

The Book of Rachael:
A Novel. Leslie Cannold. 328pp. Text Publishing. $40.00.
What if the man you loved betrayed your brother? 2000 years ago, as a
charismatic young preacher from Nazareth was gathering followers among the
people of Galilee, his sister swept floors and dreamed of learning to
read. In Cannold’s story, it is the women of Nazareth who take centre
stage. The rebellious, gifted Rachael, consigned by her sex to a life of
drudgery. Bindy, the crone who teaches her the skills of the healer. Shona
her sister, the victim of a harsh social code, and their mother Miriame, a
woman seemingly unable to love.
When Rachael falls in love with her brother’s dearest friend, the rebel
Judah of Iscariot, it seems that at least one of the women of Nazareth may
find happiness. Then a message comes from her brother in Jerusalem and
events begin to unfold that will change not just Rachael’s life, but the
world, forever.
“Only a writer as insightful as Cannold could imagine Rachael’s story so
intelligently. Read it as a historical page-turner, as a moving romantic
tragedy or as a parable about equality-but read it.” Toni Jordan |

incarnation of Jesus.” Mark W Cannister, professor of youth ministries,
