Church in the Present Tense:
A Candid Look at What’s Emerging. Scot
McKnight , Peter Rollins, Kevin Corcoran & Jason Clark. 156pp + DVD.
Brazos. $39.99.
Four authors look at the still-evolving
emerging church movement from new angles, and readers will be rewarded
with new insights. They discuss important cultural, theological,
philosophical and biblical underpinnings, and implications of the
movement. Their sympathetic yet critical assessment examines the impact
that it has had and is having on wider traditions.
Corcoran says, “The
emerging church is allergic to thinking about who’s going to heaven and
who’s going to hell, who’s on the inside or outside. The focus is on right
living rather than right believing.”
DVD included. The 60-minute
companion DVD provides: an introduction to the emerging church, video
clips of alternative worship services and interviews with emerging church
leaders and observers including Brian McLaren
and Rowan Williams.

Rediscovering Jesus.
Lloyd Geering. 48pp St Andrew’s Trust. (2010)
$12.00.
Geering surveys the advances in Jesus research since the 1980s. He
contends that Jesus was neither a prophet nor a divine figure, but a sage,
one whose vision of a new kind of society so inspired his fellow Jews that
they could not forget him after his undeserved execution. Geering sketches
how Christian doctrine evolved out of the enigma posed by his death. He
suggests that while the modern secular world has little interest in a
divine Christ sacrificed on a cross, it may find the words of the
rediscovered Jesus surprisingly relevant and challenging.
Also by Geering:
Wrestling With God:
The Story of My Life. Bridget Williams Books
(2007) $39.99.
Coming Back to Earth:

If The Church Were Christian:
Rediscovering The Values Of Jesus. Philip Gulley. 197pp. HarperOne.
$26.99.
Quaker pastor Gulley explores how the church has lost its way. An
eye-opening examination of the values of Jesus reveals the extent to which
the church has drifted from the teachings of the man who inspired its
creation. Many Christians might be surprised to discover how little Jesus
had to say about the church, and that he might never have intended to
start a new religion. Gulley provides a profound picture of what the
church would look like if it refocused on the real priorities of Jesus.
Includes questions for study groups.
If the church were Christian…
·
Jesus would be a model of living, not an object of worship
·
Gracious behaviour would be more important than right belief
·
Inviting questions would be valued over supplying answers
Also by Gulley publishing mid-Aug 2011. Pre-order now.:

Creative Mission:
Over 50 Ideas For Special Days, Celebrations, Festivals, Community-Based
Projects And Seasonal Activities.
Rona Orme. 223pp. BRF. $27.99.
Demonstrates that mission is fun, practical, easy-to-do and, above all,
possible. The book contains a wealth of ideas to help churches, large and
small, urban and rural, to connect with people who have occasional contact
with the church, as well as suggestions for the church family to join in
community events.
Many of the ideas are for families, children and adults, to enjoy together
or alongside one another. Some ideas can be used within worship; others
are for social events, fundraising activities, campaigns for justice
across the world or RE and assemblies in schools. All will appeal to
children as well as adults, but many can also be used if there are few or
no children in the church family.
The suggestions are offered for both traditional churches and Fresh
Expressions of church to select those that will work best for them and the
community they serve.

visual aids. These 60 outlines have been developed and used in an Anglican
parish church over the last eight years by a professional educationalist,
artist and experienced children's church leader. The worship outlines

that harmonises with what the adults are doing in church on the same day.
Through fun ideas, children encounter a real aspect of the Christian faith
focused on a theme to be found in the Gospel of the day. Each outline
includes a variety of options which make them workable with small and
large groups of children or single groups of mixed ages. Illustrated

The Politically Incorrect Guide to Teenagers – DVD.
Nigel Latta.180mins. Rated M. TVNZ. $29.99.
Following
the success of The Politically
Incorrect Parenting Show (DVD
$29.99), comes the next series from
clinical psychologist Nigel Latta, focusing on the hormone-filled,
angst-ridden world of the teenager. The show blends Latta's irreverent and
provocative approach to parenthood, with sound and informed parenting
advice based on his 20 years work with New Zealand families.
In this
fast-paced, entertaining mixture of live stage show, animation,
documentary, sketches and some choice archive from 'the good old days',
Latta peels back the layers of silliness which have gradually sucked a lot
of the fun out of childhood, and have layered guilt on parents whilst at
the same time destroying our confidence in our basic ability to grow
happy, healthy kids.

Latta:
Politically Incorrect Guide to Teenagers.

“Faith-filled writings on the gifts of aging. Gentle, prayerful and always
practical.” Joy Cowley
“This is
her best book yet, because she has captured absolutely the cares and
concerns of grandmothers as they brew over their children and
grandchildren and face change and loss in many forms.” Beverley, Lady

Songs Of The Redemption Hymnal CD.
Various composers. 15 tracks. Kingsway (2010). $24.99.
This album is a treasured collection of some of the most cherished songs
of the past. Birthed in the period in the church’s life where social
inequalities were challenged, where great outpourings of the Holy Spirit
were experienced, and where growth was significant, this collection of
hymns speaks of power, intimacy and urgency in ways that are vital for us
to hear today.
First published in 1951, the Redemption Hymnal drew together songs that
were the result of a two-decade period of growth and change within the
church worldwide. Pentecostalism had been born, and a thirst for the Holy
Spirit was widespread. Containing over 800 hymns, it was eventually
followed by Songs of Fellowship in 1981.

Seeking the Risen Christa.
Nicola Slee. 175pp. SPCK. $44.99
[Allow 4-6 weeks]
The figure of the feminine side of Christ is widely present in art and in
feminist theology, but the risen Christa has not so far been explored. In
this ground-breaking book, Slee, writing in a mixture of reflection,
poetry and images, revisits many of the central narratives of the gospels
and key Christological themes, re-imagining them through the eyes and
voice of the Christa, offering original and creative perspectives as a
resource for theology and spirituality.
This book is in quest of a risen Christa who invites women and men to
leave behind a clinging, dependent relationship with God and to discover a
wider, freer Christ.

An Invitation to a Meaningful Life. Joan
Chittister. 224pp Hbk. Bluebridge. $39.00.
[Allow 2-3 weeks]
A powerful
spiritual guide for all of us who are seeking a more purposeful life
today. The book is written for seekers of any faith or none—individuals,
couples, families, small groups—who are looking for true meaning while
facing seemingly countless options, both spiritual & secular, and feeling
overwhelmed by choices. It builds on the ancient Rule of Benedict to show
us new ways of meaningful living in the very center of our own

The King James Bible:
A Short History from Tyndale to Today. David
Norton. 232pp. Cambridge. $49.99.
[Allow 6-8 weeks]
The King
James Bible was the result of an extraordinary effort over nearly a
century to make many good English translations and turn them into what the
translators called ‘one principal good one, not justly to be excepted
against.’ Norton (Professor of English at Victoria University of
Wellington) traces the work of Tyndale and his successors, analysing the
translation and revisions of two representative passages.
This
fascinating new account follows in detail the creation of the KJB,
including attention to the translators’ manuscript work. He also examines
previously unknown evidence such as the diary of John Bois, the only man
who made notes on the translation. At the centre of the book is a thorough
discussion of the first edition. The latter part of the book traces the
printing and textual history of the KJB and provides a concise account of
its changing scholarly and literary reputations.

The 360 Gospel of Jesus:
Every Angle for Every Person. Jim Currin.
28pp. Grove. $16.00. [Allow
2-3 weeks]
In our concern to have a simple gospel to explain, we often narrow down
the message of Jesus. This might meet our need, but does it engage with
the needs of others—as Jesus did?
Starting with the wide range of ways Jesus presented the good news of the
kingdom, this study explores the implications of sharing faith by making
connections with different aspects of the multi-faceted diamond that is
the good news.
