Book of the Month

Traveling the prayer paths of Jesus cover Traveling the prayer paths of Jesus. John Indermark. 207pp $34.95 Upper Room, US

Jesus prayed at all times and in all places - in solitude and in the midst of crowds. Indermark invites readers to follow the example of Jesus and to learn deeper ways to connect with God.

Written as a six week study for individuals or small groups, each section has seven readings. Each reading has a related prayer exercise to help you grow in prayer and in the model of Jesus. A leader’s guide for small groups is provided. There is also guidance on keeping a journal as you work through the exercises. Gentle and inviting.

Is Christianity going anywhere cover Is Christianity going anywhere? Lloyd Geering 56pp $12.00 St Andrews Trust, NZ

Geering traces the broad sweep of Christianity’s evolution over the centuries, diversifying as it went and producing the increasingly global and secular culture of today’s world. Central to his argument is the rediscovery of Jesus as a Jewish sage. Geering teases out the implications of the radical Christian notion that God became human, and shows how the core values of the Christian Way are being expressed in the human concerns of the secular world. A valuable feature of the booklet is Geering’s summary of the key findings to date of the Jesus Seminar theological group in the US. Fascinating reading. Fundamentalism cover
Also available by Geering: Who owns the Holy Land $10, Fundamentalism $12 and Christianity without God $34.95.

Essence of Christianity cover The Essence of Christianity. Bruno Forte. 132pp $45.00 Eerdmans, US.

Italian theologian Forte discusses what lies at the heart of Christianity and why this is still good news for the women and men of our postmodern time.

"The Essence of Christianity is a superb example of his ability to speak to modern questions in the framework of the church’s basic faith affirmations. I am especially pleased that he has integrated the Jewish-Christian relationship as a core element of Christian faith for today." John T Pawlikowski, Catholic Theological Union.

Matthew for everyone cover Matthew for Everyone: Vol 1 Ch 1-15 & Vol 2 Ch 16-28. Tom Wright. 223pp $34.95 each. Westminster John Knox, US & SPCK, UK

These commentaries include Wright’s own fresh translation of the biblical text. Each short passage is followed by a highly readable discussion with background information and his thoughts on how the verses relate to our lives today. These books are suitable for personal or group study.

"A rare event: a commentary that is learned without being stuffy, accessible without being reductionist…" Eugene Peterson, Prof Emeritus of Spiritual Theology, Regent College and author of The Message.

Good as new cover Good as new: a radical retelling of the Scriptures. John Henson. Hbk $64.00 John Hunt, UK

Controversy has raged since this book was launched earlier this year. Is it a valid carefully considered modern NT translation or a mere politically correct, gender-neutral, loose paraphrase?

Henson and his team have followed the principal of cultural translation. So for instance, demon possession becomes "mental illness." Instead of wives submitting to husbands we are given, "those in committed relationships should work hand in hand with their partners."

They omit the books of Timothy, Titus and Revelation and insert the Gospel of Thomas - a collection of Jesus’ sayings. There is no Satan, sexism or Armageddon, but plenty of Jesus.

It’s the word of life, but not as we know it.

Developing visionary leadership cover Developing visionary leadership. Richard Wiliams, Mark Tanner. 28pp $12.95 Grove, UK

Visionary leadership is a gift of God that enables churches to grow and express the life of the kingdom. But what is involved in developing vision, and what skills are needed to turn vision into reality?

A church leader and a business leader collaborate to outline the key issues, obstacles and ways forward. This very practical booklet gets to right to the heart of leadership in local churches and provides lots of ideas and resources to help ministers and other leaders move their church ahead.

When the church says No cover When the Church says ‘No.’ Helen Thorp 20pp $12.95 Grove, UK

Facing not being selected for church office - whether for ordained ministry, recognised office or informal leadership responsibility - is like journeying through a strange country. It can feel like an intensely personal rejection.

Thorp has many years of experience of working with people on this journey and discusses the hard but profound biblical material on rejection. She offers wise advice for those who have been unsuccessful and pastoral tools for those accompanying others on the road. In time the ‘No’ decision can be seen as an opportunity for growth and learning.
