Wilberforce believed that slavery was wrong; and with this classic book he set out to describe for people an authentic expression of the Christian faith. In doing so, he changed the course of a nation and the world. In this modern paraphrase, Beltz introduces you to a set of principles critical in living an authentic Christian life. Although written more than 200 years ago, the timeless truths in this book will speak to you in fresh ways.
The Anti-Slave Trade Act, which became law on 25 March 1807, made the capture and transport of slaves by British subjects illegal. Slavery as such in the British Empire wasn't abolished until 1833. This book tells the story of the slave trade in the British Empire and examines the movement to bring it to an end. Subjects covered include: · the history of slavery and brutality of the slave trade · the roots of the anti-slave trade society · the strategies of the movement, the push for abolition and the legacies of the slave trade.
Slavery remains rampant worldwide, despite the celebrations surrounding the bicentenary of its abolition in Britain. At least 27m men, women and children are enslaved today, ranging from prostitutes in London to indentured workers in Burma. This popularly written but carefully researched volume includes a chapter on different forms of contemporary slavery, a chapter on the Christian roots of the anti-slavery movement, and three detailed case studies, on Sudan, Burma and Indonesia. It will conclude with a important chapter on action readers can take. Baroness Cox was until recently Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords, and a notable advocate of human rights around the world.
Acclaimed music writer, Steve Turner, traces the life of Amazing Grace and the man behind it. The song has been recorded by artists as varied as Elvis Presley, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Johnny Cash, Rod Stewart, Judy Collins and Destiny’s Child. The book begins with the dramatic story of John Newton, from his childhood, his life at sea, his participation in the African slave trade through to his writing of ‘Amazing Grace’ and his campaigning against slavery. The second part of the book - picking up the thread in the years immediately following Newton’s death - tells the story of the song itself as it has spread and developed over the past two centuries and its recordings by many famous artists from a wide variety of musical backgrounds.
'No! No! cried the little boy, 'Please no! I want to stay with my Mother!' 'Be quiet!' shouted the man who roughly pulled his mother from him. She was taken to a raised platform and offered for sale, immediately. The heart-broken mother was to be separated from her little boy for the rest of her life. This was the fate of thousands of women and children in the days before slavery was abolished. One man fought to bring freedom and relief from the terrors of the slave trade; it took him forty-five years. His name was William Wilberforce. This is his exciting story that shows the amazing effect his faith in Christ and his love for people had on transforming a nation.
William Wilberforce was a world-class statesman, a politician whose profound Christian convictions not only led to the abolition of slavery in the British Empire but also paved the way for the development of the Welfare State. The forthcoming film, starring Ioan Gruffud, Albert Finney, Michael Gambon and Rufus Sewell, is directed by Michael Apted and is due for NZ release in July 2007. This book is inspired by the major motion picture Amazing Grace and contains over 48 colour stills from the film. This entirely new biography is meticulously researched and vividly readable.

Robert Funk was a major influence on parable scholarship in the last half of the 20th century. His work on parable as metaphor led to the understanding of Jesus' parables as world-shattering. Funk redefined the form of the parable, made a substantial contribution to the argument that Jesus' parables originated in Greek, worked out a scale for evaluating parables as compositions, and proposed a model for how parables gave birth to resurrection faith.
