In 1814, Kendall was one of the first lay missionaries sent to NZ by the Church Missionary Society. He inhabited both Pakeha and Maori worlds and grappled with their contradictory spiritual compasses. He quickly learned to speak Maori, became friends with many round the Bay of Islands, and had an affair with a young Maori woman, which among other things was to be his undoing. He was among the first, because of his study of te reo, to recognise the complex inter-relationship of language and spiritual identity in the Maori world. Binney’s lively account of the content and context of his life allows a penetrating insight into the world of New Zealand’s early colonial period. Other featured titles

Efficiency, energy and autonomy are prized attributes in our society. So why should we want to let go of these, to be still and waste time with God? Because God wants us to, because we need to, and because therein lies great reward. This exploration of stillness looks at our need for it, the resources we have to engage in it, and what God can offer us through it.
