Tuamaka is the flax rope used by the mythical hero Maui and his brothers to snare the sun. Just as a tuamaka gains strength from the combination of its different strands, renowned anthropologist Dame Joan Metge plaits together the Treaty, the words and the stories that give New Zealanders a rope for building a future in Aotearoa New Zealand. She tells of cultures meeting, arguing and then dealing with diversity. Her reflections on the use of key Maori words today are especially valuable. Also by Metge: • Korero Tahi: Talking Together. Auck. Univ Press (2001). $19.95 • Talking Past Each Other: Problems of Cross Cultural Communication. 61pp Victoria University Press (2001). $9.99

Morgan, the priest of a small village Anglican church in Oxfordshire, has a happy knack for observing and telling about the depth of meaning in the normal, ordinary things of people’s lives. Because of their belief in Jesus’ divinity, members of the Johannine community were being expelled from the synagogue. John’s gospel was probably intended to give them hope and respond to the synagogue leaders. The reader is invited to undertake an imaginative journey, looking at the people, places and actions of the actors in the gospel stories, in the hope of better appreciating the gospel’s message. Uses NRSV. Also available: Navigating the Gospels: Luke. $34.00
Newman brings a fresh perspective to the missionary story, from the lead-up to Samuel Marsden’s first sermon in NZ and the intervening struggle for survival and understanding, to the dramatic events that unfolded around the Treaty of Waitangi and the disillusionment that led to the Land Wars in the 1860s.
Also by Newman: • Ratana: The Prophet. Penguin (2009). $40.00
With the arrival of Anglican missionaries to New Zealand in the 19th century, Maori were slowly converted to Christianity and recruited to build New Zealand’s early churches. These early whare karakia - houses of worship - were in a distinctive and arresting new style that combined elements from Maori art and architecture with British ecclesiastical traditions. Art historian Sundt chronicles this early phase of Maori church building in New Zealand. He traces the emergence of seven large scale whare-style churches from around the North Island - the last standing, Rangiatea at Otaki, burned down in 1995. A ground-breaking work that sheds new light on the history of religion, architecture and the story of Maori and Pakeha in New Zealand.
Archbishop Tutu and his daughter, Mpho Tutu, show how we can find our way back to goodness by changing our attitudes, by practising forgiveness, and by prayer. In 1373, a 30 year-old woman living in East Anglia suffered an illness. She received visions - what she later called “sixteen showings” - revealing to her secrets of the love of God. When she fully recovered, Julian recorded and richly explored those revelations, creating what became the first English-language book written by a woman. Frykholm’s biography paints a vivid picture of the 14th century and this remarkable woman’s place in it. Also about Julian of Norwich: • 40-Day Journey with Julian of Norwich. Lisa E Dahill ed. Mysterious and alluring, labyrinths have been in use for over 4,000 years as a means of exploring our spiritual journey, searching for meaning and guidance. Unlike a maze, where there are decisions to be made, the labyrinth is a one-path design to which we must surrender, following God’s guidance. This compact book, illustrated with labyrinths of many designs from different locations and ages, is an inspiring, meditative guide to this ancient and modern spiritual practice.
When the prodigal ute ends up in the city broken and in the rain after driving too fast, he dreams of forgiveness and his home.
