Speaking Christian: Why Christian Words Have Lost Their Meaning And Power - And How They Can Be Restored. Marcus Borg. Hbk 248pp. HarperOne. $49.99.

The language of Christianity is in a state of crisis, warns Bible scholar and theologian Borg. In a  clear, accessible style, he illustrates how modern Christianity has lost its transforming power: through a literalism that has impoverished the meaning of the Bible and a misunderstanding of Christianity’s core ideas.

Borg then offers a way to redeem Christian language from these distortions by reading Scripture through a “historical-metaphorical lens.” This allows us to see Christian language in its ancient historical context and interpret the biblical text in a way that focuses on its religious purpose. He restores power of the language of Christianity to illuminate us and transform our world.

We Will Not Go To War: Conscientious Objection during the World Wars. Felicity Goodall. 250pp. History Press (2010).  $32.00 [Allow 6-8 weeks]

During the First and Second World Wars thousands of men and women in the UK refused the call to arms. Reviled, starved and beaten, theirs was a battle of conscience.

In WWI, 73 conscientious objectors died as a result of their treatment, and hundreds more were imprisoned. During WWII, many conscientious objectors performed other, non-combatant duties with great heroism, including bomb disposal, and joining the fire service and ambulance crews.

Unable to turn a blind eye to the dark realities of war, these men and women, who came from all classes and backgrounds, wrestled with their moral values, and their struggles, motivations and stories are brought together in this moving and challenging history of war’s outcasts.

God’s Battalions: The Case For The Crusades. Rodney Stark. 276pp. HarperOne (2010). $28.99. [Allow 1 week]

Stark takes on the long-held view that the Crusades were the first round of European colonialism, conducted for land, loot, and converts by barbarian Christians who victimised the cultivated Muslims. Instead, Stark argues that the Crusades were the first military response to Muslim terrorist aggression.

He reviews the history of the seven major crusades from 1095-1291, demonstrating that the Crusades were precipitated by Islamic provocations: by centuries of bloody attempts to colonize the West, and by sudden new attacks on Christian pilgrims and holy places. Although the Crusades were initiated by a plea from the pope, this had nothing to do with hopes of converting Islam.

Nor were the Crusades organised and led by surplus sons, but by the heads of great families who were fully aware that the costs of crusading would far exceed the very modest material rewards that could be expected--most went at immense personal cost, some of them knowingly bankrupting themselves to go. Moreover, the Crusader kingdoms that they established in the Holy Land, and which stood for nearly two centuries, were not colonies sustained by local exactions, but required immense subsidies from Europe.

The Rise and Fall of the Bible: The Unexpected History of an Accidental Book. Timothy Beal. 244pp Hbk. Houghton Mifflin (2011). $47.00. [Allow 2-3 weeks]

In this revelatory exploration of one of our most revered icons, a critically acclaimed author and professor takes us back to early Christianity to ask how a box of handwritten scrolls became the Bible, and forward to see how the multibillion-dollar business that has brought us Biblezines and Manga Bibles is selling down the Bible’s sacred capital. Showing us how a single official text was created from the proliferation of different scripts, Beal traces its path as it became embraced as the word of God and Book of books.

Among his surprising insights:

Christianity thrived for centuries without any Bible—there was no official canon of scriptures, much less a book big enough to hold them all. Congregations used various collections of scrolls and codices.

There is no “original” Bible, no single source text behind the thousands of different Bibles on the market today. The farther we go back in the Bible’s history, the more versions we find.

The idea of the Bible as the literal Word of God is relatively new—only about a century old

After Shock: Searching for Honest Faith When Your World Is Shaken. Kent Annan. 136pp. InterVarsity Press (2011). $32.00. [Allow 2-3 weeks]

In the wake of a historic earthquake in the fragile country of Haiti, Kent Annan considers suffering--from the epic to the everyday - as a problem for faith. Less than two weeks after the release of Kent’s book about his work with Haiti Partners, he heard the news. Friends trapped under the rubble of buildings. Friends sprinting across the city looking for family. Churches - including one Kent often attended - turned to rubble. Suddenly Kent and his friends were part of an uncomfortable fellowship: people whose faith is shaken by crisis. Taking courage from the psalmists of old and the company of his grieving neighbours, Kent has found that there is solidarity in suffering. Others have followed life to the edge of meaning and have heard God even there, calling for honest faith. Are there questions or realities your faith can’t handle? Kent wrote After Shock to help you find out.
